Alicia Gowans opens her first gym in Garden City, Mount Gravatt Pro Diva Fitness Model, Alicia Gowans, is opening her first gym in Brisbane. The gym will feature a tailored, individualised approach to fitness and includes classes that Alicia created especially for her gym. The gym will be prominently located in Garden City. It will be the only gym to open at the Westfield Garden City shopping centre. Alicia said her gym, Oasis Health Club, will be aimed at a wider audience than gyms typically cater for. She said, “I follow a holistic philosophy and have deliberately embedded that into the gym. “Some gyms have a very one-sided approach to fitness and I want to counter that. I want a gym that will speak to those people who have a goal to get fit to a level that they choose, and for their reasons, not someone else's .. “And I particularly want it to be for families,” she said. “As a woman, as a mother, and as someone who has gone through what it takes to become fit, to go through a life cycle change from pregnancy to post injury—and also having a mother who suffered from diabetes and some overweight family members—I know what concerns people about gyms. “I know the kind of equipment that they would want and the kind of inviting environment that we need to provide for them to feel like they want to come. That’s really what is important to me." “I hand-picked the personal trainers. They’re the best of the best. “We really worked hard to make sure that we’re able to provide tools, equipment and a nurturing environment for people from all walks of life and all levels of fitness to come and actually take the step to change their lives,” she said. Alicia has had a lot of experience with fitness, training programs, and gyms. As well as being a Pro Diva Fitness Model with World Beauty Fitness and Fashion (WBFF) she runs her own competition preparation business in Brisbane, where she prepares aspiring athletes for the stage. But her road to fitness wasn’t always an easy one. Alicia was once a Prima Ballerina and sustained a debilitating fracture to her spine that left her unable to walk for days at a time. “I became very focused on fitness while rehabilitating from that injury,” she said. “I wanted to learn how to do it for myself. I wanted to know how to not injure myself in the future. How to stay fit and strong. How to move safely. “I wanted to take myself from being unable to move to being able to get stronger and healthier and fitter and that’s when I fell in love with gyms and the process of building fitness.” Alicia has returned from California where she was training for a World championship title. “So much has been happening over the last few months,” she said. “I was asked to become a brand Ambassador for Gold’s Gym, which is where I was training in their original Venice Beach gym. The idea of opening my own gym emerged and I was going to open it under the Gold’s label. “As I got into it more, and particularly when I got a bit of distance away from the constant small details necessary to launch a really good gym, I realised that this was an opportunity to design and build a gym to align with my own values and not that of a franchise. “For example, I am developing training especially for new mums who want to get their gorgeous bodies back after the birth, as well as other courses tailored to specific needs,” she said. “We tailor our programs for each individual member. I know that the ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach is a myth. Yes, there are certain foundation principles that are consistent for everyone. But to reach your goal in a minimum of time and to maximise your gym experience, you need a program customised just for you. “And Oasis Health Club is designed for anyone who has a fitness goal. And that means any fitness goal, large or small, because I know there are really no small goals and that even someone’s ‘smallest’ goal is genuinely a big goal for them", Alicia said.
